The samba reggae percussion band “Batala Badajoz” is known for carrying out energetic, noisy and colourful performances to any corner of the world.
Batala’s music originates in Salvador de Bahia, in northeastern Brazil. Born from the hand of Giba Gonçalves, a drummer and composer from Salvador Bahia, being one of the founders of the Cortejo Afro originated in that country; an arts education project to help at-risk youth living in Brazil’s favelas, when it moved to Paris in 1997, Batala was launched in Paris as the European wing of the project.
Batala Badajoz began in 2004 and is among the first 10 bands to be formed worldwide. In spite of being an Association registered in Extremadura, they have developed performances all over the Extremadura, Spanish and international geography, highlighting their participation in the Badajoz Carnival (considered as one of the three best in Spain and declared of National Tourist Interest by the Government of Spain and of Regional Tourist Interest by the Junta de Extremadura), in the Rock in Rio Lisboa, in the Pride LGTB of Madrid, in the Fan Zone of Real Madrid F.C. in the Final of the Champions League in 2014 or the collaboration with Grupo Abbsolute for the celebration of the Fifth UEFA Europa League of Sevilla F.C. in 2016.
