It was founded on May 5, 2013, in response to the community’s interest in preserving and promoting traditional Mexican dance. Its primary goal is to strengthen the cultural identity of every individual who takes up the practice of dance, whether as a performing art or as a means to develop motor skills and socio-emotional bonds.
Because rehearsals take place outdoors, local residents have witnessed the dancers’ hard work and commitment. This visibility has inspired more and more people to join their ranks. Currently, the group consists of approximately 200 dancers ranging in age from 6 to 90 years old. While most members come from the Iztapalapa borough, people from other districts have also joined. This widespread interest drove the creation of additional ballet groups in different locations to expand their reach, thereby forging stronger connections between dance and modern society.
Passion and dedication define this young group, which to date boasts an extensive repertoire of over 40 traditional dances from various regions of Mexico.
Folklórico Cananea was founded and is directed by Marco Guerra, a dancer with over 21 years of experience and a graduate of the Amalia Hernández School of the Ballet Folklórico de México. He is supported by a team of 7 professional dance instructors committed to bringing culture closer to communities.
