It was born in February 1983, the members who started their activities on this date already belonged to the Dance Group “Pedeva” since 1978, as they all belonged to the Pedro de Valencia School in our city. In 1983, the instrumental part and the choir joined this group. On the 12th of April 1985, this group was constituted as the Cultural and Folkloric Association “El Castellar”, from this date they began to work in the investigation and maintenance of the Extremadura Folklore. On 23rd June of the same year and after being investigated by members of the Group in the Pensioners’ Home of Zafra, the Regional Costume of Zafra was presented.

Since its birth they have travelled almost all over Extremadura, showing the richness of our Folklore, and have participated representing Extremadura in the National Festivals held in Leganés, Getafe, Alcalá de Henares, Toledo, Huelva, Jerez de la Frontera (Cádiz), Alcalá de Guadaira (Sevilla), etc… They have also taken the folklore of Extremadura beyond our borders, with performances in France and Portugal.

They publish annually the Cultural Magazine “EL CASTELLAR”, where they reflect among other articles, the activities and anecdotes occurred during the year and they have published a book “El Folklore de Zafra” where they collect all the experiences, performances, activities, … from their birth until 2005.

It has an Academy of Regional Dances where classes are given to numerous schoolchildren of different ages, as a result of which it has a Children’s Group and a Youth Group.
