The Folkloric Group Los Jateros from Fregenal de la Sierra, Badajoz -Extremadura-, was created in 1965 to dance and sing in the festivity of the patron saint of Fregenal, “La Virgen de los Remedios”. Without forgetting the original cause, little by little it began to widen its field of work, becoming the dissemination of popular dances and songs of Extremadura, the other objective of the group.
Throughout its existence it has travelled all over Extremadura, having participated in festivals and recitals in countless cities and towns in our region. It has also taken part in similar events in cities all over the country, representing Extremadura in practically all the autonomous communities and in the most important festivals in Spain. The popular dances and songs of Extremadura have also crossed national borders with Los Jateros, participating in international festivals and performing in Portugal, France, Switzerland, Germany, Bulgaria, Italy, Holland, Belgium, Argentina, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Estonia, etc., where the success obtained was remarkable.
They have performed numerous times on radio and television programmes. They have recorded five albums, the last one, entitled “Los Jateros: 50 Aniversario”, is still available on the market. In addition to the dissemination abroad, they maintain a School of Extremaduran Popular Dances and Music in their city, which serves as a quarry for the main group. At present, the Group is made up of some 200 members, divided into children, youths and regular members, the latter comprising some 70 members.
They are organisers of the Festival Internacional de la Sierra -FESTISIERRA-, a Festival of National Tourist Interest, which this year celebrates its 42nd edition in Fregenal de la Sierra.
